Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced during a cabinet session that pollution compounds the challenges of climate change and is the result of flawed policies in dealing with projects that contribute to pollution. He added, "We have begun reducing gas flaring and are proceeding to zero out gas flaring by 2028 and halt greenhouse gas emissions, especially in oil-producing provinces."
He added that the brick factories in Nahrawan are a source of pollution emissions and must be converted to gas or relocated outside Baghdad.
He stated that the Baghdad Metro project is part of the solutions and that these projects represent a qualitative leap in the issue of treating pollution, and we have directed the ministries and concerned authorities to expedite their completion.
